Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon almond extract

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup cocoa powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 2/3 cup chocolate chips

  • 1 cup melted caramel

  • Course Sea Salt


Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in both sugars until well combined. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly. Incorporate the almond and vanilla extracts.

  2. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.

  3. Pour the brownie batter into a greased 9x9 pan, spreading it evenly. Bake, in a preheated oven, at 350 degrees for approximately 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs. The caramel layer will create a gooey center, so don't overbake.

  4. While brownie is baking, melt 1 cup of caramels until pourable. (Do this in a large bowl as caramel can bubble up quickly). This would equal 2-3 packages of Werther's chewy caramels; unwrap and place in glass bowl. Microwave at 30 second intervals until melted and able to be poured. This will take less than 5 minutes.

  5. As soon as the brownies come out of the oven, pour the caramel over the top and spread across in an even layer. Sprinkle a generous pinch of flaky sea salt over the top. The salt enhances the richness of the chocolate and caramel, creating a perfect balance of flavors.

  6. Allow the brownies to cool completely. Once cooled, cut into squares and savor the divine combination of chocolate, caramel, and sea salt. If you have trouble cutting the caramel, spray your knife with a little cooking spray to keep the caramel layer from sticking.
