Psalm 139: The Inescapable Presence of God

Psalm 139 unfolds as a profound meditation on the omnipresence and omniscience of God.  In its verses, we explore the relationship between the Creator and His creation.

"O Lord, You have searched me and known me.  You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar.”

The Psalm opens with a recognition of God’s all-encompassing knowledge.  There is a deep comfort to be found in understanding that we are fully known and understood by the Creator.  From our actions to our innermost thoughts, God’s awareness of them has no limitations.

"Where can I go from Your Spirit?  Or where can I flee from Your presence?  If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.  If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there will Your had guide me and Your right hand will hold me fast."

This section echoes the profound truth that there is no place beyond the reach of God.  Whether in the heights of joy or the depths of despair, God is intimately connected to every aspect of our existence.  His presence is our constant companion, offering comfort, assurance, and peace if we choose to accept it.

"For You formed my innermost parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.  I will give thanks to Your, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.  Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well."

In this portion, we get to ponder the intricacy of His creation.  Each person, uniquely designed, fearfully and wonderfully made.  We are masterpieces crafted by the hands of an almighty God; the body itself miraculous in how it moves and fits together for us to function.  As we consider that we are His workmanship, it invites a spirit of gratitude and self-acceptance as we grow to understand that we are intentionally and purposefully designed.

"Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my thoughts.  See if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

The ending verses of this chapter, arguably the most difficult to live, contain a humble prayer, inviting God to search the depths of our hearts.  They are acknowledgement of our surrender to His divine leading as we continue on our journeys this side of heaven.

May the words of Psalm 139 resonate in our hearts, reminding us that we are known by a God whose presence accompanies us in every step of our walk on earth.
