Psalm 91: A Shelter in the Storms of Life

As the calendar turns a new year, there are certain consistencies that will stay with us even with 2023 behind.  The new year holds so much promise and optimism but we know that there is no magic button that eliminates our worries and concerns going into 2024.  For the month of January I have decided to remind myself of my favorite Psalms; these are the passages that comfort me in the middle of sleepless nights when nothing seems right.

Psalm 91 has always been one of my favorites.  Known as the Psalm of Protection, it stands as a timeless source of comfort and faith, offering a refuge for a soul that is carrying the weight of the world.

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."

The opening verse sets the tone for the entire Psalm, inviting the believer to find refuge in His divine presence.  It paints a vivid picture for us, as we see shadows of doubt and fear overrun and dispelled by the presence of an Almighty God.

"I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him will I trust."

Amid life’s various challenges, this Psalm serves as the constant remembrance that our trust in the Lord gives us refuge and a fortress.  It is a powerful affirmation of faith, a reminder that at our most vulnerable, we can find strength and protection in the arms of a God who loves us.

"For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways."

Divine protection; angels watching over us at every step in our journey.  A comforting reminder that, even in our darkest seasons, we are not alone.

"You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day."

In a world filled with uncertainties, these words reassure us that fear need not be our constant companion.  Whether in the darkness of the night or the challenges of the day, the promise is clear:  divine protection shields us from our adversaries.

"Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore, I will deliver him; I will set him on high because he has known My name."

The ending brings us an encouraging promise of deliverance for those who trust in God.  It’s a reminder that, in knowing the name of the Lord, we find a source of strength, peace, and ultimate protection. It doesn't mean the challenges won't happen, but it serves as a reminder where we can find shelter during the storms of life.

As we have turned the page into a new year, none of us knows what the future holds.  Let Psalm 91 be a guiding light, in times of joy and in times of uncertainty, that the future is fully known and in His loving hands.
